Mummy Makeover

What is the Mummy Makeover Surgery?

Pregnancy causes many changes to a woman’s body to support the good health of the baby; however, the changes may cause aesthetic concerns for the woman. During the last month of pregnancy, you will notice the most bodily changes due to swelling and stretching of the abdominal muscles and tissue. Once you deliver the baby, your breasts will also swell due to milk production.

Since the abdominal muscles and tissue get so stretched out, and the breasts become very swollen, they may never return to their pre-pregnancy condition.

For this reason, Dr Andrew Broadhurst performs the mummy makeover treatment, which involves joining more than one surgical procedures together to turn the clock back to your pre-pregnancy body effectively.

When to Think About Having a Mummy Makeover?

It’s recommended by Dr Andrew Broadhurst to wait at least one year after your last childbirth before considering plastic surgery. It’s also vital to ensure you have finished breastfeeding for at least six months before surgery.

During an initial consultation with Dr Andrew Broadhurst, he will make treatment recommendations for your mummy makeover. These recommendations will be based on the state of your post-childbirth body and your personal cosmetic goals.

It’s also important to know that a mummy makeover is not a weight loss surgery. You must be a healthy weight and have had your final child prior to receiving the treatment.

What are the Advantages of the Mummy Makeover Procedure?

The advantage is that the procedures are all performed together during a single operation, which reduces recovery time as one combined recovery. You will be able to achieve the body image you would like in one operation, rather than multiple.

Surgeries that can be included:

Breast treatments:

  • Breast augmentation – The treatment to enhance and increase the size of the breasts using implants.
  • Breast lift – Removes excess skin and reshapes the breast tissue to restore firmness, while raising the nipples and breasts.
  • Breast reduction – Reduces the size of the breasts to help make them proportionate to your body.
  • Breast implant revision – Replaces old breast implants with new breast implants.

Body treatments:

  • Tummy tuck – Removes excess skin and fat to make the abdomen thinner, tighter and more firm.
  • Liposuction – Removes excess stubborn fat cells in specific areas of the body.

What is the Mummy Makeover Procedure?

You will receive the combination of cosmetic procedures under general anaesthesia. Generally, women choose to have a breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction together as part of their mummy makeover. The breast augmentation is also a common procedure.

Women who had a caesarean (childbirth through a cut in the abdomen) may also require a scar revision.

The procedures are aimed at correcting the most common aesthetic concerns caused by childbirth and breastfeeding for women.

How Long is Recovery After a Mummy Makeover?

After a mummy makeover procedure, you will typically require one or two nights in hospital. Once returning home, you must have a relative or friend stay with you for a day.

You will also require two weeks off work and other household duties as you must rest. It will take a further four to six weeks before you can resume light physical exercises.

During your consultation with Dr Andrew Broadhurst, he will discuss the recovery process and what is expected of you.

Risks and Complications of the Mummy Makeover

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. Dr Andrew Broadhurst will discuss the risks associated with the mummy makeover procedure with you during the initial consultation process.

The post-operative complications such as blood clotting and infection are quite rare. Infection is treated through antibiotic use, and blood clots can be avoided by gentle massages and moving around as soon as possible post-surgery.

Other risks include scarring, numbness, anaesthesia side-effects, swelling and bleeding.

What are the Costs Associated with the Mummy Makeover?

The cost of the mummy makeover will differ for each patient as expectations and requirements are different for everyone.

However, during your initial consultation with Dr Andrew Broadhurst, he will be able to provide you with a detailed quote. This quote will include the surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee, assistant surgeon’s fees and the hospital fees.
