Breast Implant Removal & Replacement

What is a Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?

A breast implant revision and replacement is the process of removing breast implants and replacing them with new implants.

Reasons for Breast Implant Replacements?

Women choose to have implants replaced for a range of reasons, most commonly due to complications with their current implants or aesthetic concerns.

Complications can include:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Implant rupture
  • Implant deflation
  • Implant displacement (uneven)
  • Leaking implants

Cosmetic concerns include:

  • Aesthetic ideals change over time
  • Want larger or smaller implants
  • Want a different shape or position

Implant Removal and Replacement Surgery

You will have an incision made along or above the breast crease, which will be used to remove your implants and the scar capsule through a capsulectomy.

Once your implants have been removed, you will have your new implants inserted.

However, the same implants can be washed and reused if they are intact and not damaged. Implants are reused in cases where they are not damaged, such as displacement or capsular contracture.

For other cosmetic concerns, you will most likely need new implants to match the size, shape and aesthetics you want.

Risks associated with Implant Removal and Replacement

The decision to have an implant revision and replacement due to cosmetic concerns is personal, and you must be aware of the potential complications. As with all invasive surgical procedures, breast implant removal and replacements come with risks and complications.

Risks of breast implant removal include:

  • Discomfort
  • Swelling & bruising
  • Loss of sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring

Risks of breast implant replacement include:

  • Rupture
  • Implant displacement
  • Changed sensation
  • Capsular contracture
  • Rippling

The recovery after Breast Implant Replacement

Breast implant removal, revision and replacement is performed under general anaesthesia, and Dr Andrew Broadhurst will use the same incision site from the initial breast augmentation procedure.

During your recovery, you will experience swelling and bruising for a few weeks, along with sensitive skin.

You can resume light household activities after two days, and you will typically only require one week off work. You must refrain from any strenuous activity or exercise for several weeks, while you allow your incisions and breasts to heal.

For the final result, it will take a couple of months.
