Breast Lift Surgery

Mastopexy or “breast lift” surgery is often performed to correct droopy breasts which is a medical condition known as “Ptosis.” A mastopexy lifts your breasts and improves their shape by restoring volume or fullness to the upper part of your breast. The excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is re-shaped restoring fullness to the upper breast and re-positioning the nipple in the middle of your breast.

This operation can be performed as a Day Surgery procedure.

Any woman with droopy breasts can undergo breast lift surgery to improve their shape. Some women have naturally droopy breasts and others develop droopy breasts after breast-feeding. In both cases a breast lift procedure will correct breast shape. If you are considering having children in the near future then you should delay breast lift surgery until after you have completed your family.

During your consultation with Dr Broadhurst he will review your past medical history including any previous breast operations and any medications you may be taking. He will then perform a clinical examination of your chest and breasts to exclude any breast lumps or other medical conditions that may be present. Only after a thorough medical history and clinical examination can Dr Broadhurst determine if a mastopexy is right for you.

You will then discuss the operation in detail and what to expect after the operation.

A further consultation will be scheduled to ensure your complete understanding of the procedure and to give you a chance to ask any further questions.

Most breast lift procedures can be performed under a general anaesthetic as Day Surgery procedures. The operation involves removal of the excess skin and reshaping the breast. The reshaped breast will be lifted and will sit slightly higher on your chest. Your nipple will remain attached to your breast throughout the surgery so nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed are unaffected.

After arriving at the hospital there will be some paperwork that must be completed including admission forms.
You will meet your anaesthetist who will discuss the details of your general anaesthetic and your options for pain relief following your operation.

Dr Broadhurst will see you to answer any final questions before the surgery. He will then draw markings on your chest where the incision will be located and implants placed.

After completing the pre-operative formalities you will be taken to the operating theatre.

All incisions are closed with internal dissolving sutures. Dressings will be applied and a surgical bra fitted before the anaesthetist wakes you up.

After your operation you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be closely observed by our experienced nursing staff who will take care of you until you are awake and ensure that you are comfortable.

You will be allowed to go home once you have fully recovered from your general anaesthetic which is usually three hours from the completion of your operation. After your operation it is very important that you remain in the care of a responsible adult who will stay with you overnight.

Your anaesthetist will prescribe pain killers for you to take in the days following your surgery. There will be mild to moderate discomfort following your operation and it is advisable that you take it easy for the first week. An appointment will be made for you to see Dr Broadhurst two weeks after your operation.

It is best to take it easy for the first few days following your operation and gradually increase your level of activity to a level you’re comfortable with. You can return to work as early as one week after your operation but for women with more physical occupations two or more weeks may be necessary to enable greater recuperation.

There are risks involved with any operation and these include the anaesthetic and the operation itself. If you are fit and healthy then the risk of complications is generally very low and Dr Broadhurst will discuss all risks with you prior to your surgery.
